Due to COVID-19 and the possible need for school closure, the CPCISD school board has revised the 2020-2021 school calendar and extended the school day by 15 minutes (8:00 am - 3:35 pm). These changes will provide 18 days of flexibility should a complete school closure be required. Special thanks to the parents, students, staff, and community members who responded to our calendar survey. 76% of you responded positively to the proposed changes. There were certainly some difficult decisions to be made and your feedback helped us consider every option. You may print the calendar from our website: www.cpcisd.net

There is one week left to apply for P-EBT food benefits. You should have received a school letter with a link to the application. P-EBT is for children who received SNAP March 2020 and children who are certified for free or reduced-price school meals during the 2019-20 Texas school year. If you have not received information, please contact 833-613-6220. Visit hhs.texas.gov/PEBT for more information.

P-EBT
We are posting this in hopes to obtain feedback from our beloved community before moving forward with a possible alteration of our school calendar for next year. Our state’s commissioner of education has indicated that regardless of what happens with the COVID-19 Virus for next year, our students will be required to make up any days missed if they fall short of the minimum time requirements. Most schools build in a small cushion every year just in case they have to close for the flu or for bad weather. Our school is no different; we always build in a little extra time just for such events. This year, though, we have considered starting our school a week earlier and adding fifteen minutes to the day which is different than what we discussed when we approved the school calendar in March. This accomplishes two things for us this year: 1. It gets our kiddos back into school a little sooner as we can only imagine they are going stir crazy for being out for so long. 2. It allows us to build-up a total of 18 extra days of time in case we have to close school for an outbreak of the flu or COVID virus within our community. Last year, we had to close school for several days for the regular flu, and we anticipate parents being even more cautious about their children this year (and rightfully so). We will call these extra built in days, Contingency Days, on the calendar. If we have to take time out from school, we will go to school on these days. If we don’t have to close school for a length of time, our kiddos will have five extra days off during the school year for small breaks. We believe that not adding this extra time may result in us having to add those extra days to the end of the school year next year which will more than likely have our students with an altered graduation day and a school year going on into June. We would like to take these proactive steps to avoid this, but we wanted your input before we moved forward. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Take Care of Texas program announced winners of its sixth-annual K-5 art contest. Students were asked to submit artwork demonstrating how they help keep the air and water clean, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste. Staff at each TCEQ regional office selected winners from each of the regions’ qualifying entries. We are proud to share that CP 5th grader, Crystal Presiado, was awarded the Region 5 title, and will receive a tablet computer! Winning art pieces will be showcased on the Take Care of Texas and TCEQ websites, newsletters and social media. Congratulations, Crystal! #EaglePride247
